Glycine and Breastfeeding
There is currently no information available on glycine and breastfeeding. Therefore, it is not known whether the supplement is safe to use when breastfeeding. Although glycine is found in many foods and produced naturally by the human body, glycine supplements may contain contaminants or other ingredients that are not safe for women who are breastfeeding. Before taking glycine, breastfeeding women should discuss the possible risks and benefits with their healthcare provider.
Glycine is an amino acid that is found in many foods and dietary supplements. It is not known if glycine is safe for use in women who are breastfeeding. Until more information is available, it is probably a good idea to avoid glycine supplements while breastfeeding.
At this time, there is no information available to suggest that glycine supplements are safe (or unsafe) for women who are breastfeeding. It might seem logical that glycine supplements would be perfectly safe for breastfeeding women, as glycine is just an amino acid that is found in many foods (and produced naturally by the human body). However, just because a normal dietary intake of glycine through food is safe, it cannot be assumed that using glycine supplements medicinally is equally as safe. Perhaps, the higher levels of glycine in the supplements could cause problems or, perhaps, the glycine in supplements is slightly different from the glycine found in foods. Or, it is possible that glycine supplements could contain contaminants or other ingredients that are not safe for breastfeeding women. Until more information is available, it is probably wise to wait until after weaning your child to take glycine supplements.
You should talk with your healthcare provider about glycine and breastfeeding. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, you and your healthcare provider can make a shared decision about glycine and breastfeeding that is right for you.
